Skate Magazines Web Survey

Posted by: apple

Even though we are all Web nerds here at The Hot Crew, whenever a new skate magazine arrives we still fight over who gets to read it first. So we decided to take look at the magazines’ Web presence. It’s just a very simple technical test. We did not look into design, usability or content. Maybe we will do that next time.

Skate Magazines Web Survey (conducted on Aug 19th, 2005)
Magazine Size Time MarkUp CSS Semantic Tableless Feed
Kingpin 194KB 12s HTML 4.01 Transitional Yes Almost Yes No
Transworld 813KB 50s No Doctype Some No No No
The Skateboard Mag 128KB 8s XHTML 1.0 Strict Yes Yes Yes No
Thrasher 866KB 53s HTML 4.01 Transitional Some No No (+iframes) RSS2
Skateboarder 674KB 41s No Doctype Some No No No
Slap 159KB 10s No Doctype Some No No (+iframes) RSS1

Note: Size and Time check was done with Web Page Analyzer.

Absolute worst: Skateboarder, it managed to crash our browser!

The clear winner is The Skateboard Mag. It has a few validation errors, but those should be very easy to fix. And if it also had an RSS feed, it would be the best site everrr. Come on John, get to it!

Thanks for the inspection. I will take this opportunity to thank Apple for his support in urging me to adopt standards based practices. It made the web fun for me again… And now I get more done too.

The RSS Feed is not being neglected, trust me. I’m hot on it. My concern as to the content of the feed have led to some interesting discussions and the possibility of a creating a new section of the site in which to base the feed. My feeling being the current news section is not strictly skateboarding and i would feel better to offer a feed that is.

In terms of validation, I think the raw ampersand issue is a drawback and I’ve contacted the vendor of the php style stuff we use and they are going to attemt to fix it in their next release. I think we will probably convert the whole ball of wax to php anyway.

    Thanks again.
